One other thought--the new generation of Southern Baptists do not have a clue about how we function, even the simplified process you suggest (which I applaud). On top of that, here in NYC our churches are 75%+ non English speaking and our challenge at education is that much more challenging. We are, in some sense, a victim of our own success. Especially in cities, a new effort at communication is essential. Unfortunately, this also comes at a time when our agencies are streamlining, readjusting resources, and our focus is one dimensional in North America.

I agree with Tony. I see other ministries operate much more efficiently than the SBC entities. Our church gives proportionally more to missions than others in our area, but it is not all to SBC entities. SBC must legitimize other faithful ministries and maybe consider adopting their practices. Fact is: continuing go.do the same thing with same philosophies is not working and is alienating many pastors.

"As an aside, if there are so many ministries that people genuinely think many of them are unnecessary and they redirect their funds because of these ministries, maybe it is, once again, time to think of simplifying and streamlining, but as I said already, that is a conversation for another day."

This I think is a key issue- From those I have spoken to- this is why they give less. They think too much money goes to administration and ministries that are less important, and not enough to the ministries that are most important. Whether they are right or not- we need to be careful about your Step 1. Because they know enough about the process to say "no it pays this guys salary, and he is not a missionary" and they feel deceived.

Great points, Micah. Too many times we (perhaps unintentionally) promote the CP as the end goal when it fact it should be the means to the end, which is the advancement of the Kingdom.

Thanks for your perspective. I have been a pastor for 30 years and have consistently supported the cooperative program. All the churches I've pastored have endeavored to give at least 10% of our undesignated giving to the CP. I try every year to make it as simple as possible, probably to the point of confusion! As Chair of the NWBC Exec Board Finance Committee the last two years (and now Pres. of the NWBC) I am seriously concerned about the slow down in support of the CP. It is not just a financial issue- during the Great Depression churches gave more than they are giving now. It is a heart and head issue. So, thanks for your thoughts and your heart. May all younger pastors follow your lead.
