Snakebit

I can assure you that this will never be something that I am arrested for. This is unbelievable. I may be accused of a lot of things, but this will never, ever, ever, be one of them.

Like my pastor says, when God wants me to handle a snake, He’ll put a handle on the snake. I haven’t seen any of THOSE, yet.

When it comes to snakes, I shoot first and identify later.

I wonder if they have a bronze snake on a pole during the services too… i bet they have hardly anyone sleeping during the services though…

I’ll eat them if someone else prepares them.

Also,

I wonder how literal the pentecostal or bapticrazies would take the Bible if this were taught in a class in seminary?

I spent a lot of time with snake handlers in Middlesboro, Pineville and Barbourville, KY.

A more devout people you will never met.

Very theologically wrong, but devout nonetheless.

That is the strange part to me. They really do believe they are right.

I must admit, a snake handling service is one of the most fascinating events I have ever witnessed.

Whew!!!

Back in 1976, I worked for a company that had me selling books door to door in West Virginia, and my partner and I were invited to a “Jesus’ Name” church one Sunday morning. We went, just because neither of us had ever been in one of those Appalachian Pentecostal churches. I wore my hair somewhat longer in those days, and got a lot of hostile stares from the congregation, where the men generally wore crew cuts. As the service progressed, it got pretty wild, people falling out, shrieking, crying, wailing, dancing in a frenzy, ladies passing out while taking care to tuck their skirt between their legs and get covered with a blanket. We didn’t know it was a snake handling church until the altar call and as soon as I saw a lady handling a pretty good sized timber rattler, we were out of there.

WOW. That’s insane… I’ve also got to ask, as a RSS reader, how often do you change up your site’s appearance, dude? ;)

AJ-

Yeah, I get a hard time from a lot of my friends for changing blog themes pretty often. Usually a month or two is the longest I keep one. Creating new ones is a relaxing thing for me so I do it for fun.
