Another reason to love Dr. Rogers

Although I already have an enormous appreciation for the life of Dr. Adrian Rogers, I’ll have to admit that my admiration grew a bit today. While having lunch with a friend of mine who is a member of our church, but who also grew up at Bellevue, I was surprised to learn that Dr. Rogers was a diehard Gators fan. My friend loved Dr. Rogers but is also a fan of FSU so it pained him a bit to share it with me, but I couldn’t be happier. :-)

After a bit of searching, I ran across this Baptist Press article that confirms it. It’s good to see men of God who not only love God’s word and His church with a passion, but who also love the greatest team in America with a passion. :-)

Micah, once again we see that even the greatest of our heroes in the faith demonstrates fallibility at times. My respect for Dr. Rogers could not be dimmed, even when I came to know this about him (I witnessed a great debate over this particular issue between my father and Dr. Rogers). I just chalk it up to depravity; although this depravity was not “total.” Right conference, wrong team. Go Vols!

Please don’t tell me that you’re going to try to argue for Kentucky’s supremacy? If so, I will laugh.

Speaking ill? I’m offering praise. If I am correct, you would like to argue that we should root for the team that had to go to Florida to find its head coach. Why not just go to the source of greatness, that being UF?

I like you man, I really do. Unfortunately, as you attempted to point out, even the best of people can be sidetracked in their pursuit of greatness. As I was traveling through Knoxville last week, I had to laugh as I listened to sports talk radio talk about Florida almost as much as they did UT. I guess they know what greatness looks like and they are hoping for that in Knoxville someday. Unfortunately, Knoxville is still shuffling around in mediocrity. You know what they say about the Citrus Bowl and UT? :-)

I thought I already made this clear before. The Gators in football, and the Memphis Tigers in basketball. And our favorite team of all is whoever’s playing Notre Dame. In our family, we also have a strong rivalry between the Tennessee and Florida fans. I am most definitely NOT a Vol Fan (no love lost from the Gator side, or the Tiger side there), and neither was my Dad.

I had completely forgotten that we had that conversation. Thanks for the reminder. I cannot agree more about the Volunteers, though. It’s unfortunate, however, that you have to root for that Memphis bunch. I hear they’ve got a cute little athletic program but I have a feeling they sit around most days wishing they were as powerful as UF. :-)

David, I never thought about the rivalry between UT fans and Gator fans in the family. Is that kind of like Jews and Gentiles getting married?

Anyways, I like to let Micah gloat. After the 90’s, the Noles felt it was time for someone else to have a little fun. At least that’s what I like to tell myself.
