I read Bro. Guy’s blog–he’s absolutely spot-on. It’s a real scandal of Baptist churches, who claim to have no other authority than Scripture, that they come to a given issue with their made up by a tradition they hold quite tenaciously. They then take a machete to the Bible, seizing on proof-texts and doing great damage to the original, contextual meanings of those passages. Would Jesus justly say to some of us, “Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition” (Matt. 15:6)? Hmmm.

(Ack–the second sentence should read, “…with their minds made up…” I haven’t had my coffee yet).

I would hope some of our old BCF professors would agree with this article. I think we spend far too much time arguing over theology and far too little time proclaiming the truth of scripture.

I agree wholeheartedly with you! We have got to be people who lean only on scripture. We have to fight against the urge to color our application with our history or our preferences.
