What’s your favorite?
Blogging will be slow for the next week or so. I won’t write as much and, according to my statcounter, you won’t read as much. I am curious, though, in this slow blogging season, if you would share with me what your favorite books of the Bible are and why?
I’ll start:
Old Testament: Isaiah
I am amazed at the greatness of God in Isaiah. Whether the prophet is talking about God’s glory or God’s mission or, the greatest message of all - the coming Messiah, there is no avoiding the greatness and majesty of God in the book. It is a captivating book to me.
New Testament: Philippians
I love the message of the gospel as seen in Philippians. Beyond that, I love the clarion call to partner with other believers to be on mission with God as we see it in Philippians. I also appreciate the no-nonsense message about following Christ as we see in places like Philippians 3:10-11.

Old Testament - Toss up between Psalms and Proverbs - timeless wisdom that seems to pop up whenever I need it
New Testament - a Tie between Colossians and Ephesians - they go hand in hand to provide a pattern to be used for discipleship and Christian living.
OT- Proverbs because of the wisdom
NT- I’d agree about Philippians. I love Philippians 1:21
Psalms and Acts.
OT - Job, keeps me focused…reminds me the God alone is enough.
NT - Matthew, because of the Sermon on the Mount. I believe if we could “catch its truth” it would change the world.
Are you familiar with the “Little Red Book on Golf”? James is the Bible’s version of it. Hit’s hard and to the point. Isaiah is probably my OT choice. Quite a dichotomy, huh? Isaiah sucks you in and makes you dig.
OT Book - Hosea because it is such a beautiful picture of God’s love and mercy.
NT Book - Colossians because it shows the Supremacy and Deity of Christ.
OT book - Leviticus - lays the groundwork for understanding Christ sacrifice for me.
NT book - Ephesians - shows how the church is the key to loving my neighbor as myself.
Hebrews is far and away my favorite book of the Bible, with its picture of Christ as the once-for-all sacrifice and so very much more. I’d love to hear you preach through it some day, as well as 2 Corinthians, which is my second fav book, with its extraordinary contrasts in chapters 4 and 5 and a great deal more as well.
In the Old Testament, Nehemiah is my favorite, because of the intimate 1st person nature that the book is written in. Talk about seeing into someone’s soul.
In the New Testament, I love the book of Acts. If we ever truly saw our churches come to that kind of simplistic service and love for Christ and each other, the lost would be beating down our doors.
