Weekend Worship :: Amazing Grace (My chains are gone)

July 28, 2007

I am passionate about my favorite worship song, “Amazing Grace.” In my opinion, there is simply no better song that captures the heart of the gospel than this great hymn of the faith. I love, however, our attempts to communicate this incredible song in a contemporary, relevant manner. Chris Tomlin’s new rendition of this song with his chorus added, is an exquisite effort in my opinion. We sing it often at our house, in fact as I type this and listen to the video, my 3 year old daughter (named Grace, appropriately) is singing the song verbatim in the background. This is good stuff. I hope it encourages you in your faith this weekend.

I have not heard that rendition yet! What a blessing! Thanks for posting it.

I agree Hillary. We sang it just this morning in church and it was powerful and moving!

‘like a flood his mercy reigns.’

What have those two metaphors got to do with each other?

I mean I know what it means to convey in the song but it’s gobbledegook isn’t it?

Great hymns are best left alone.

Alex-
Surprise, I disagree with you! :-)
I think his point is that God’s mercy is like an unstoppable flood in our lives and this His mercy reigns over any sin that may exist in our lives. I don’t think that message is “gobbledegook” at all. I’m not quite sure you would consider something with that significant of a message to be “gobbledegook”?

I may be wrong but it sounds to me as if you approached the song with a pre-disposition against the modernization of hymns. Am I correct?
